Reading Fluency Brochure - a Parent Handout Great for Parent/Teacher Conferences

 With parent/teacher conferences right around the corner I thought I would share one important handout I give to a lot of my parents during Spring conferences.

It seems like this is the time of year where first graders who are fluent readers really start taking off with their reading and children who are struggling with reading fluency really start to lag behind.

Since reading fluency is such an important skill to build, I talk a lot about reading fluency with those parents who have a child struggling in that area during Spring conferences.

I like to give out this brochure because it really helps me discuss what reading fluency is and why it’s important for their child to have.

This reading fluency brochure is a simple, print-and-go resource to give parents to provide them with information and tips on how to foster reading fluency at home. 

The inside of the brochure describes what reading fluency is, why it's important, and lists ways parents can help improve their child's reading fluency at home.

The back of the brochure gives parents fun sight word activities to do at home with their child to help build reading fluency.

Simply print these two pages front to back then fold the paper to create a tri-fold brochure. 

Not only is this brochure helpful to handout and discuss during Parent/Teacher conferences, it’s also great at IEP meetings, RTI meetings, etc.

I like to attach some sight word flash cards with this handout for a great fluency building homework packet.

Sight Word Flash Cards, Sight Word Parent Notes, & Sight Word Homework Log for Parent/Teacher Conferences

With parent/teacher conferences right around the corner I thought I would share something I always do at my conferences.

I always send home practice pages with parents when I talk to them about their child struggling in a certain area.

If that area is handwriting then I send home handwriting practice pages, if it’s in the area of math facts then I send home flash cards, etc.

Since my students are in first grade one of the most common things some of them struggle with is reading fluency.  That is why I send parents home with these sight word practice pages.  They can use these to practice building their child’s sight word recognition at home.

Parents are always so appreciative when they leave conferences knowing they have a game plan in place to help their child improve in the area they are struggling with.

Here’s a look at my sight word flash card bundle that I send home with my parents.

I include a parent note explaining what sight words are and why they are important.

I also include a whole page of ideas on how they can practice sight words with their child at home AND in FUN ways!

You can also begin to send home this weekly checklist to remind parents to have their child practice their sight words as homework each night.

DIGITAL SIGHT WORD ACTIVITIES

It seems as if a lot more schools are going digital lately.  Whether that means they are doing virtual learning or classrooms are getting equipped with learning devices.  It's always great to add a digital spin to an ordinary learning activity.

I created these digital sight word flash cards to use in my classroom.

Each digital flash card set is color coded based on the DOLCH word list used.

For example:

Blue Set: Pre-Primer Words

Orange Set: Primer Words

Yellow Set: 1st Grade Words

Purple Set: 2nd Grade Words

Green Set: 3rd Grade Words

These digital flash cards open in PowerPoint (or Google Slides) and can be used multiple ways in the classroom.  I like to display them on my Smartboard as we read through them together as a class.

Not only can these digital flash cards be used whole group, but you can also use them at small group, at literacy centers, during computer lab time, or even with students that need one-on-one help and/or RTI interventions. 

These digital flash cards also come in handy when you have a little extra time left in class or if you need to step aside and talk to another teacher/adult.  Simply put this presentation in slide show mode and have one of your student volunteers click the mouse to flip through the flash cards as the class reads each word aloud!

You can also organize your deck of flash cards with these helpful divider slides.  Divide your deck into words your students know well and words they still need more practice with.

These digital flash cards are a wonderful tool for students to practice building and improving their reading fluency.  When the students are ready for more of a challenge then I move on to these sight word fluency phrases!

Each digital flash card set is also color coded based on the DOLCH word list used.

Each card includes either a phrase or a short sentence.  Many of the high-frequency words are used multiple times and each set of phrases builds on one another.  For example, the orange set has words from the pre-primer and primer list of sight words.  The yellow set has words from the pre-primer, primer, and 1st grade list of sight words, etc.  Each set of cards includes 75 phrases/short sentences that are aligned to each word list, totaling over 375 cards in all!

Fry Digital Sight Word Fluency Phrases and Short Sentences

SIGHT WORD FLUENCY PHRASES AND SHORT SENTENCES ASSESSMENTS

If you are looking for a new sight word assessment for your students check out my Sight Word Fluency Phrases and Short Sentences Assessments.

In the past I used my Single Word Sight Word Assessments for most of my first grade RTI kids that struggled mainly in the area of reading fluency.  You can read more about those assessments HERE!

But if you are looking for a step above single word sight word assessments then check out these Sight Word Fluency Phrases and Short Sentences Assessments.

These phrases are a wonderful way to test students on how well they are building and improving their sight word recognition and reading fluency.  These assessments are great to use for intervention assessments such as RTI, progress monitoring, etc.

Send home the assessment pages so parents can see how their child is doing.

How it Works: Each assessment is color coded based on the Dolch word list used.

For example:
